How did this committee come about?

 Who are we?

The Child Action Committee was formed in 1997 and one of the committee's working groups is the Partners Against Violence.  That sub-group played an integral role in the development of the Five Hills Health Region Domestic Violence Protocol.  This group also hosted a forum in the fall of 2007 to solicit feedback from service providers about issues of violence, existing services, gaps and possible solutions.  "Building a Safe Community Committee" was formed as a result of this action plan by all of the partners.

"The Building a Safe Community" project promotes the values of the 'Partners Against Violence.'  The goals of this project are to "increase awareness" of the issue of violence in our region, response strategies, and the services and supports available; to explore and develop means of advocacy in our region; to help people deal with issues of violence and connect them with services; to encourage training of persons who respond to violence; to better coordinate and promote available services; to promote preventative measures to curb interpersonal violence and abuse; and to empower individuals.  One staff coordinates this project.

All members of the community and this region are potential participants and are invited to be part of this committee.  The membership and others of this community who make up this committee will be involved in the design and delivery of this project. Interested persons can join at any time. This project belongs to everyone.

"Violence is everyone's business."
