#1 : Taking medications
is very important - especially for seniors. Taking your medication as
directed can improve your well-being and ability to live independently.
Ask questions and spend time with your pharmacist, because taking your
medications as properly instructed by your doctor can lower your chance
of hospitalization, avoid health deterioration, reduce your risk of
falls and extend the time you can live independently.

#2 : Being aware
and educated about drugs is the first step for parents in fighting drug
abuse! If you think your child is using drugs, get help now! Your first
goal is to free your child of drug use before it turns into an addiction
or abuse. If your child is not using drugs, prevent them from starting
by teaching them that drugs hurt people, and will keep them from building
personal, social, academic and job skills that they will NEED in the
future.

#3 : Today children
are hearing about all the important issues from TV, movies, magazines,
and friends at school. Parents need to talk to their children early
and often so they can talk about and influence these important issues.
Initiate conversations with your children at a young age, so they will
feel comfortable talking to you about problems or issues as they emerge.
Listen to your children, and give them your undivided attention.

#4 : Addictions occur
in people of different ages, education levels, culture, and socio-economic
situations. Addiction is not caused by weakness, lack of self-control
or willpower. There are many factors that can increase a person's risk.
Help, treatment, and support from families, friends, workplace and other
community groups are necessary for the recovery process and to decrease
the chance of relapse.

#5 : Keep kids involved!
That's what we can do as a community to help our youth! Drug and alcohol
free community activities organized around the family help build healthy
communities. Things like positive youth leadership activities and social
and recreational activities help build self-esteem, coping skills and
resiliency that will help our youth grow and become future leaders.

#6 : There is no
cure for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and it affects one out of every
100 children born in North America, making it the leading cause of brain
damage to babies during pregnancy. But it is 100% preventable by abstaining
from alcohol use during pregnancy. The effects of prenatal exposure
to alcohol last a lifetime and there is no safe time or amount
of alcohol to drink during pregnancy.

to be treated with respect for winning one of the hardest battles there
is.

#8 : Binge drinking
is a major problem in today's society. Binge drinking is defined as
drinking five or more drinks in a row for males and three or four for
females. Having many drinks in a short period can lead to an alcohol
overdose or alcohol poisoning. Know the risks, and avoid binge drinking
by mixing alcoholic beverages with non-alcoholic beverages, waiting
at least an hour between drinks and keeping track of how many drinks
you have had.

#9 : The secret to
helping children and youth grow into happy, healthy and responsible
adults isn't really a secret at all. Make a point to connect with young
people: get to know them, talk to them, understand them, help them and
build relationships with them. As a caring trusted adult, you'll be
better able to provide the building blocks young people need to succeed
and reach their goals. With your help, young people can begin to understand
themselves and the world around them.

#10 : Work puts
people in close contact for the long portions of their day. This makes
the workplace key in helping people with alcohol and drug abuse issues.
Employers, support your employees who need help and be a partner in
employee assistance programming. Co-workers are often the first to spot
the changes in each other, so be observant, talk to fellow co-workers
and be supportive.

#11 : Remember when
you were young? That neighbour who greeted you every morning? That family
friend who took time to play basketball with you? Too many kids today
don't experience that kind of care. Many adults ignore them. The next
time you see children or teenagers, look at them. Smile. Greet them.
Let them know you care. It will make a big difference. We are working
to create communities where young people can thrive.

#12 : Each spring
we carefully tend our gardens and flower beds. We water them, cultivate
them, and celebrate their growth. We need to do the same thing for kids!
They need us to care for them. Guide them. Treasure them. We all want
to give kids what they need to grow up healthy, caring and responsible.
Take time today to plant these seeds of hope in the life of a young
person you know.

#13 : Do you know
the name of the young people on your block? Together we can help strengthen
our neighbourhoods by building development assets - building blocks
that will help our young people to succeed. Ways to show young people
you care are: learn their names, don't hesitate to smile and wave. Work
with your neighbours to make your neighbourhood a safe and caring place.
Together we can make our community a great place to be young.

#14 : One in seven
Canadians aged 15 or over have alcohol related problems. One in twenty
have cannabis related concerns, and some have problems with other illegal
drugs. Substance abuse problems affect people of all ages, education
and income levels, religions, cultures and occupations. There are many
reasons why people develop substance abuse problems, but regardless
of why and how they develop, they are health problems and should be
treated without prejudice.

#15 : Prejudice
and discrimination against people with mental health and substance use
problems excludes them from activities that are open to other people,
and often leads them to believe negative things, have a lower self esteem,
and contributes to them keeping their problems a secret. As a result
they avoid getting the help they need. Know the facts instead of the
myths and reduce prejudice and discrimination.

#16 : A good host
will make sure that their guests feel at home. A good host will ensure
their guests are entertained, well fed and enjoying themselves. A good
host will also make sure that any drinks are enjoyed responsibly. The
Canada Safety Council recommends the host, or any other available person,
should regulate and monitor the consumption of alcohol at their party.
Have fun, enjoy yourself and be responsible.

(MIX
103 Version): V1: (ANNCR) Motorized snow vehicles and alcohol do
NOT mix. Snowmobiling leads to more serious injuries than any other
winter sport, and well over half of all snowmobile accidents involve
alcohol. Not only does it impair your judgment, vision, and reflexes,
and greatly increase the chance of hypothermia... it is also a serious
crime. Have a safe winter, and if you're going sledding, do NOT drink
and drive.

(MIX
103 Version): V1: Second hand smoke contains over 40 toxic substances...
all of which are known to cause cancer. Children breathe more air relative
to body weight and have a weaker immune system, which means they are
even more susceptible to second hand smoke. Smoking is a person's right,
but smoking around a child is nowhere near right. Don't risk your child's
health, protect them from second hand smoke.

: V1: Boating is a lot of fun, and a great way to spend a summer day.
It's also an activity that requires a lot of focus... focus you won't
have if you've been drinking. In every province, operating a boat while
under the influence is a highly illegal offense which can lead to thousands
of dollars in fines, and even jail time. Be safe and responsible on
the water.

: V1: ATV's help you find those "hard to get to" places. They're
a ton of fun and perfect for hunting or fishing trips. But if you choose
to drink, and then drive, you could be convicted of a serious offense
under the criminal code. It doesn't matter where you are, or how far
you're going... driving an ATV while impaired is a serious crime. Don't
drink and drive.

V1: The best way to stay safe, is to stay informed.
V2: Myth -- it’s okay to mix prescription drugs with alcohol.
V3: Fact -- If your doctor or pharmacist has indicated that the drug
you've been prescribed is not to be used with alcohol, then respect
that. Often times taking medication with alcohol can triple or quadruple
the effects of both the medication and the alcohol. Protect yourself
by avoiding alcohol if you're taking a medication and don’t know
its effect.
